This study is a detailed history of men and movements in southern education and is based largely upon first-hand information. In Volume I, the author tells the story of the long struggle for public schools. Volume II tells of the origin and development of the Conference for Education in the South, of the Southern Education Board, and of the origin of the General Education Board and the various commissions that grew out of it to put a great educational crusade into effect.
