David Settle Reid served North Carolina as governor and as U.S. senator. The papers shed light on Democratic Party activities, education, internal improvements, tariffs, territorial expansion, slavery, and sectional conflict. They also chronicle antebellum family life in the rural South.

About the Author

Lindley S. Butler, received his A.B., M.A., and Ph.D., degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to numerous articles and reviews, Butler has published two brief histories of Rockingham County and monographs on the coming of the American Revolution, local Scouting, and early Albemarle County.
