About the Author

Albert Ray Newsome (1894-1951) was a distinguished historian and writer. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Dr. Newsome served as Secretary of the North Carolina Historical Commission and as Editor of the North Carolina Historical Review (1926-1935), helped to create the Society of American Archivists (1936), and chaired the History Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1936-1951).
