Reviews
“The armed struggle that both preceded and followed on the 1968 Tlatelolco Massacre became on a way the ‘unconscious’ of Mexican modernity in the last third of the twentieth century, eclipsed by the more spectacular rise of narco violence. That has changed with the new century and there is now an ample corpus of films, novels, testimonios, memoirs on the armed struggle. Aurelia Gomez’s book is the first to provide a critical overview of this corpus and its significance in Mexican politics, history and culture today.”--John Beverley, Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Hispanic Languages and Literatures, University of Pittsburgh
“The work of Aurelia Gómez-Unamuno on the literature and memory of recent history in Mexico is strongly relevant and original. Although for several years now a number of people in the country have carried out research on the student movement of 1968, academic work on the guerrillas and the dirty war of the 1970s and 1980s has begun only recently. Aurelia’s work is part of that innovative sector of academia that is approaching issues that had been relatively marginalized. She has focused on the literary memories of the armed movements, as well as on the role played by women in these organizations, something no one else has worked on.
