Director of Editorial, Design and Production Services

Longleaf Services (LL), a not-for-profit affiliate of the University of North Carolina Press, seeks a Director of Editorial, Design and Production Services (EDP) to deliver the highest quality, cost-effective services to Longleaf clients around the country and abroad.

The Director of EDP is a highly detail-oriented, and organized leader with strong communications skills and a proven ability to handle a diverse set of responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. The position will continually foster the growth of the LL Publishing Services team by recruiting new and retaining existing clients while coordinating the implementation of company initiatives and best practices that support the achievement of company goals and objectives promoting a financially sound and compliant organization. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage all facets of the relationship between clients and LL for EDP Services
  • Manage LL EDP staff including:
    • Continually monitoring workloads to ensure adequate staffing levels
    • Providing ongoing staff training and development opportunities
    • Maintain an adequate pool of qualified vendors and freelancers
  • Develop, document, implement, and update content workflows
  • Responsible for the financial management of EDP Services, including financial planning, execution of budgets, maintenance of financial controls, records, and reporting
  • Review and approve all invoices for vendor services provided to LL EDP Services and submit to Accounting Department to ensure timely reimbursement 
  • Prepare invoices for services provided by Longleaf EDP Services and submit them to the Accounting Department to ensure timely billing
  • Provide monthly reports on trends in client participation in LL EDP offerings on a calendar and fiscal-year basis, as well as other ad hoc reports, as needed 
  • Champion efforts across the organization to improve processes and create efficiencies that lead to increased productivity and/or reduced costs
  • Assist in developing key strategic initiatives and stay informed of developments in the publishing services environment

Specialized Duties of the Position:

  • Work with the LL CEO and Publishing Services staff to develop, document, and implement systems policies, and procedures for both EDP and Publishing Services
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate new service offerings and manage all costs
  • Keep abreast of technological advances related to providing high-quality content, research and recommend new technologies to both LL and the clients we serve
  • Supervise the recruitment and management of staff —in-house or external—responsible for editing, designing, producing, manufacturing, and distributing content (books, journals, or online-only)
  • Manage the onboarding process for new client presses
  • In consultation with the LL CEO, establish guidelines for pricing of services and controlling production and manufacturing costs on behalf of our client presses
  • Seek new clients, monetization opportunities and develop strategies for all LL services. 
  • Represent LL Publishing Services within the university press and library communities
  • Develop and foster connections with authors, current and prospective clients, vendors, press directors, and university/library staff to increase the standing of LL and its publishing services

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6 years in publishing focused on editorial, design, and production to include management of both staff and projects.
  • A record of success in optimizing existing procedures and introducing new ones. 
  • A sophisticated understanding of orders/fulfillment processes and a proven record of managing business partner relationships. 
  • Ability to work collegially, inspire confidence and trust, and maintain a positive and empowering work culture. 
  • Ability to recognize and capitalize on new opportunities for expanding the client base.
  • Excellent technical and organizational skills
  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word and Excel, report-writing tools, such as Informer, and the demonstrated ability to quickly learn new software systems.
  • Knowledge of both book and journal publishing preferred as well as experience in a nonprofit setting.
  • Strong communications and leadership skills to ensure active and continued engagement in the organization’s efforts pertaining to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
