Senior/Executive Editor for History

UNC Press is seeking a creative, intellectually curious, and mission-driven publishing professional who will acquire general interest and scholarly books in history, current affairs, and related fields, as a senior or executive editor. The individual will report to the Editorial Director and will work collaboratively with colleagues to help lead the overall direction of the Press’s lists across all subfields in history. The core responsibility for the position is to identify, develop, acquire, and transmit 20-25 books a year, prioritizing high-impact works by diverse voices inside and outside the academy. One key aspect of this position will be to lead the ongoing development of the Press’s prestigious “Justice, Power, and Politics” series, which publishes new works exploring questions of political power and struggles for justice in the United States from the twentieth century to the present. As the Press begins its second century of existence and seeks to extend its reach by serving new communities of readers and writers, this editor will also have opportunity to help us expand our lists in transnational history and global affairs.

Applicants should have a strong record of developing productive editorial relationships within scholarly communities and with writers who seek to reach diverse publics. We seek candidates who can articulate a clear vision for extending the Press’s excellence in history publishing and for building on its mission to advance general knowledge and understanding as the leading public university press in the nation. Ideal candidates will also be well-equipped to teach, mentor, and guide new and experienced authors as well as early-career colleagues. Priority will be given to applicants with sustained experience building a successful book list in history and/or closely related fields; we also welcome applications from candidates with a relevant combination of experience leading scholarly communication initiatives coupled with advanced study in history or a closely related field.

This is a full-time position with benefits and salary commensurate with experience. Applicants will have a bachelor’s degree and graduate study or equivalent preferred.
