As the W. Hodding Carter Executive Editor, I work closely with writers to produce fresh, provocative books that cross traditional boundaries and speak to diverse readerships. I oversee acquisitions for the press’s new Hodding Carter imprint, which features original and innovative works of history that will help to shape the understanding of America’s past for the next generation of readers. I acquire both trade and scholarly books on all aspects of American history, from politics and economics to cultural, intellectual, and social life. I also acquire for the series InterConnections: The Global 20th Century as well as general international and global history, particularly transnational political history, beyond the series. I am particularly interested in books that hope to tell novel stories, find new audiences, and transcend the barriers of field and discipline.
Throughout my career, I have acquired and edited numerous acclaimed and award-winning titles, including Nicole Fleetwood’s Marking Time, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Nothing Ever Dies, a finalist for the National Book Award. Books that I have edited have regularly been recognized for their quality and intellectual ambition, with many garnering the top prizes from leading scholarly organizations, including the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, the National Jewish Book Awards, the American Studies Association, the Museum of African American History, and the Berkshire Conference of Women’s Historians.
