Juneteenth

The abolition of slavery was one of the greatest expansions of freedom in American history. Yet for more than a century, the nation had no shared national holiday commemorating emancipation. Juneteenth tells the story of how this particular Emancipation Day celebration emerged and evolved to fill that void. Originating on June 19, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce emancipation more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Juneteenth came to embody the gap between the declaration of freedom and the lived reality of freedom. Following Juneteenth’s trajectory from Reconstruction-era Texas to its national recognition in 2021, Emily Blanck reveals how the holiday has reshaped American historical memory by holding celebration and critique together—and by insisting that emancipation is not only a moment to remember, but a promise that demands continued accountability.
