Religious studies and religious history; Western, borderlands, and labor histories; food studies; literary nonfiction; regional/Southern studies
I acquire books in religious studies and religious history; Western, borderlands, and labor histories; food studies; literary nonfiction; and regional/Southern studies. In each area, I publish work aimed toward a range of audiences — scholarly, crossover, and general – and I enjoy working with writers at every stage of their project, particularly making sure authors feel supported and informed throughout their publishing experience. Work across my lists often relates to issues of justice, land, labor, migration, race and ethnicity, and the environment, but they also touch on gender and sexuality, belief systems, media, health and medicine, and more. I’m always looking for projects that tell a good story while illuminating new scholarship, and for trade and literary nonfiction projects, a writer’s unique voice and attention to language especially catch my eye.
Conferences I can usually be found at include American Academy of Religion (AAR); American Historical Association (AHA); Organization of American Historians (OAH); Western History Association (WHA); Association for Food and Society (ASFS); Southern Foodways Alliance (SFA); and the Association for Writers and Writing Programs (AWP).
Before joining the Press in 2017, I worked in higher education, teaching creative writing, literature, and composition. I have an MFA in poetry from the University of Pittsburgh, as well as an MFA in nonfiction from the Rainier Writing Workshop. My essays have appeared in The Georgia Review, Gettysburg Review, Fourth Genre, River Teeth, and elsewhere. Honors include a Pushcart Prize and Notable distinctions in Best American Essays.
