Littlefield History of the Civil War Era 

In 2008, UNC Press joined with the University of Texas at Austin to commission a landmark series of volumes, written by some of the most respected historians of the American Civil War, to address the conflict in its broadest context. Collectively, the Littlefield History of the Civil War Era series was to provide a comprehensive narrative of the Civil War era from the beginning of the sectional crisis through Reconstruction. Initial funding support was provided by the Littlefield Fund for Southern History at the University of Texas at Austin.  

The fifteen works published between 2008 and 2020 fulfill the original vision of the initiative with books that both synthesize existing scholarship on their respective subjects and provide new interpretive frameworks reflecting the best and most rigorous scholarly inquiry.
