Reform and Reaction

This well-documented study deals in moderate, objective terms with a critical and particularly sensitive aspect of Spanish history. This notable contribution examines the background of the Spanish Civil War and explores the nature of church-state relations in Spain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This analysis of the Spanish politico-religious conflict of 1936 shows that the clash between church and state came to be the direct cause of the downfall of the republic.
