The Norman Conquest of the North

Kapelle’s study of the North of England in the years before, during, and after the Norman Conquest is a fascinating account of a pivotal, but little-studied, region of medieval England. He explains the resistance of Northumberland and York to Norman settlement in terms of the region’s geographical, historical, and political background, his approach based on a new interpretation of old evidence and previously ignored geographical, agricultural, and dietary information.
